Portland has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to gluten-free dining, but now more than ever they are taking it up a notch. From gluten-free ooey gooey cinnamon rolls to Top Chef-created dishes, you will find lots of delicious gluten-free options.
Kyra?s Bake Shop
www.kyrasbakeshop.com
We love the darling gluten-free bakery that Kyra Bussanich?three-time Cupcake Wars champion and baker extraordinaire?opened up years ago in the Portland neighboring city of Lake Oswego. So, it wasn?t a surprise that we were also smitten with her hot new caf? and bakery. The new location replaces the first with significantly more space, a full dining area both indoors and out, and an expanded menu. You will still be able to order Kyra?s famous cinnamon rolls and award winning cupcakes while also having the opportunity to be swooned, as we were, by her hearty breakfast and lunch sandwiches, quiches and pretzel dogs. With a full caf? menu, you will surely leave with a full and happy gluten-free belly. I know I did!
Departure

Departure is another hot spot you don?t want to miss, and it is right in the heart of Portland. This pan-Asian restaurant has set itself apart through the culinary workings of Top Chef finalist, Gregory Gourdet. Gregory was previously a sous chef at Jean-Georges and his talent shows through in every dish. Here I enjoyed the most mouth-watering scallops that were served with charred spring onion and lemon and smoked to perfection. I also reveled in Dungeness crab fried rice that was full of Thai basil and sausage as well as fragrant ginger. The desserts were each a visual masterpiece and tasted just as wonderful as they looked.
New Cascadia Bakery

New Cascadia Bakery is another Portland gem that I highly recommend. The baguettes and bread are out of this world delicious! Stop in for either and grab a bowl of their famous granola, a slice of pie or pizza while you are there. The goal at New Cascadia is to bridge the gap between naturally leavened, whole-grain traditional breads and gluten-free bread baking to create a tasty product that everyone can enjoy. The motto at New Cascadia is that ?your grandmother would approve? of all ingredients used. You won?t find any preservatives here, just ?fresh summer berries filling the pastry crusts, autumnal stone fruits paired with spices and rolled into flaky envelopes of dough and cakes baked with care and an eye for perfection.?
Ground Breaker Gastropub

If you?re in Portland, you must head on down to Ground Breaker Gastropub and order one of their delectable sandwiches or famous beer-steamed clams and mussels with a baguette. And be sure to wash the food down with a cold pint of their homemade gluten-free beer. This dedicated gluten-free brewery and pub also serves decadent desserts like bread pudding made with New Cascadia Bakery?s bread. The brewery?s approach to making great gluten-free beer is simple, ?don?t start with what you don?t want.? All of the ingredients in the beer are naturally gluten-free and safe for those living a gluten-free lifestyle.
