Helping Families Manage Celiac Disease Through the Back-to-School Transition

Helping Families Manage Celiac Disease Through the Back-to-School Transition

From late-summer gatherings and travel to school cafeterias and after-school activities, planning ahead can help families navigate changing routines while safely maintaining a gluten-free diet. For children and adults living with celiac disease, the back-to school time of transition can bring added considerations around meals, snacks and eating away from home. Transitions can create new challenges for families managing celiac disease, particularly when children are eating in new environments or away from home more often. Planning ahead, communicating with caregivers and school staff, and having safe foods readily available can help families approach the new season with confidence

Tips for a Safe, Gluten-Free Transition

Plan Ahead for Gatherings

Whether attending a backyard barbecue or a birthday party, ask the host about the menu ahead of time. Bringing a favorite gluten-free dish is another great way to ensure there is always a safe option available.

Prevent Cross-Contact

Gluten-free foods can become unsafe if they come into contact with foods containing gluten or utensils that have touched gluten containing foods. Use clean grills, cutting boards, serving utensils, and food preparation surfaces whenever possible, and avoid shared condiments that may have been contaminated.

If possible, be the first person to get food from communal dishes or buffet style meals to reduce the chance of cross contamination.

Pack Snacks for Travel

Road trips, beach days, and flights can make finding gluten-free food more difficult. Packing snacks and easy meals can help families avoid situations where safe options are limited.

Prepare for the School Day

Before school begins, talk with teachers, school nurses, cafeteria staff, and other caregivers who may be involved in your child’s meals or snacks. Make sure they understand your child’s dietary needs, the importance of preventing cross-contact, and what to do if accidental gluten exposure occurs. Ask your pediatric gastroenterologist if your child qualifies for a 504 plan which may help with school accommodations for celiac disease.

Read Labels Every Time

Marinades, sauces, salad dressings, ice cream toppings, and other seasonal favorites may contain hidden sources of gluten. Even if you’ve purchased a product before, it’s important to read the ingredient label each time.

Supporting Families Beyond the Diagnosis

Managing celiac disease involves much more than avoiding gluten. Ongoing education, nutritional guidance, and regular follow-up care help children and families build healthy habits that support lifelong wellness.

RWJBarnabas Health’s Pediatric Celiac Disease Center offers New Jersey’s only comprehensive multidisciplinary pediatric celiac disease program, bringing together pediatric gastroenterologists, registered dietitians, and mental health providers to deliver personalized care. Patients receive support through nutrition counseling, education, and resources that help make the transition to a gluten-free lifestyle more manageable.

Dr. Agrawal adds, “Living with celiac disease does not mean missing out on summer traditions. By planning ahead, asking questions, and working closely with your care team, families can confidently enjoy everything the season has to offer while protecting their health.”

As one season gives way to the next, a little preparation can make a meaningful difference. By establishing a plan for school, activities, travel and meals away from home, families living with celiac disease can head into fall feeling informed and prepared.
